Cafeteria

Now don’t go picturing the linoleum floors and plastic trays that signify high school’s most socially oppressive socially oppressive place.  There’ no “loser” table here…though hierarchy does come in to play when Demi and Ashton decide to dine here….it’s one of the power couple’s faves.  You won’t find crusty meatloaf or mushy pasta here either.  Cafeteria’s menu features classics like burgers and fish chips, but the main attraction here is the mac and cheese.  Have yours the way you remember it from childhood if you’d prefer, but Cafeteria also does a few all-new takes on this dish: try it drizzled in truffle oil, covered in bacon, or stuffed into spring roll wrappers and deep-fried.

This swanky Chelsea spot has been hailed as “unquestionably hip.”  It features a full-bar, complete with signature drinks, and a constant stream of socialite devotees.   Everyday New Yorkers fight alongside the industry’s most elite for a coveted seat at Cafeteria’s narrow bar.  Hmm….come to think of it, maybe this place isn’t so different from high school after all.

Get the NYC Look: Preppy and Polished

NYC may not be the cleanest city in the world, but its inhabitants more than make up for it with immaculate style.   In the Big Apple, it’s all about clean lines, structure, and a delicate balance between classic and funky.  Trendy pieces have their place in New York, but when it comes right down to it, New York style always reverts to the basics.

Just look at Kourtney Kardashian.  Since moving to New York, the reality star has traded in her fun, printed rompers and tunics for a more sophisticated style: totally New York.  The trick to nailing this look is to be keeping it simple and elegant, but to find one piece that really adds some oomph.  Kourntey does this here with her leopard print bag, but you have several options for rounding out the NYC look.

A great blazer:  New Yorkers love to look professional, even when they’re not on the job.  Blazers are super trendy right now, but they’re also the perfect way to achieve that timeless look.  It’s a good idea to invest in a few blazers: one basic tailored, one roomy boyfriend style, and that’s a bit flashier: either in a bold color like red, one with detailing on the lapels, or an all-over sequined style.

A perfect LBD….or twelve:  The little black dress works any time, anywhere, but the streets of New York are especially fond of this wardrobe staple.  The trick to finding a great little black dress is to look for one that is essentially quite basic but distinctive at the same time.  A classic fit with subtle detailing is your best bet.

A statement bag: In NYC, obvious designers labels are considered bougie, so skip that Louis Vuitton monogrammed Speedy in favor of something more indefinable.   A printed bag looks chic.  But your absolute best bet for a perfect NYC bag?  An Hermes Birkin bag -   if you don’t consider the price tag.

New York Fashion Week preview

If I could be anywhere right now, it wouldn’t be a sandy beach, basking in ninety degree weather, a pin colada in hand.  No, if I could spend this week anywhere, I would choose a place even more frigid and dreary than Pittsburgh – I’m talking about the Big Apple.  The concrete jungle where dreams are made (of.)  I’m talking, of course, about New York City.

So what is it about NYC right now that hold even more appeal than  sun and sand?  Come on, guys, if you don’t know the answer to this, you’ve obviously been living under a rock – it’s New York Fashion Week!

NYFW is the chance for the fashion world to put it all out there – new looks, new themes, and a new season are brought to the Lincoln Center stage.  But don’t worry if you can’t make it to the shows (i hear snagging an invite can be a bit of a challenge) – you can keep up with all the action at Newyorkfashionweek.com.  Check the site for garment images, a list of all the participating designers, and your chance to add some fabulous clothes to your wish lists.  You know I’ll be doing the same!

Pierre Hardy Opens First Store in the U.S.

Make room on your Christmas wish-list. Shoe-designer extraordinaire, Pierre Hardy, just opened a store in New York City in time for the holiday season.  Hardy, who in the past has collaborated with Gap, has set up shop in West Village.  His beautiful designs are prominent in the dimly-lit, understated store.  Visit 30 Jane St. to buy a Hardy masterpiece (or to at least window shop)!

The Incredible Edible Egg in The Big Apple

New Yorkers longing for country cookin’ head to Egg.  This breakfast and lunch destination offers American classics with artisanal ingredients: hamburgers from pasture-raised beef and grilled cheese made with sharp Grafton cheddar.  Egg is located at 135 N. 5th St. in Brooklyn. Night owls need not fear—breakfast is served until 3pm.

Dress Accordingly in New York City

Maniacs,
Our girls in the NYC are totally in touch with their inner MANIAC biotch, and they aren’t afraid to flaunt it. The dress is always haute, and in the city that never sleeps, fashion week is every week. For the upcoming fall ’08 season I want you to think clean, tailored lines. I’m talking tailored suits, skirt and blouse, and fitted waistlines. You know the drill.

Your daytime look can be a little more relaxed than your nighttime…but this isn’t LA. I’m not sending you stomping through Bryant Park in your cutest baby doll dress. We’re still looking for structure here. Men’s tailoring for women is so in it’s ridiculous, so aim for tuxedo blouses, a tailored straight to wide legged pant, or, hello, skinny jeans.

You may have guessed that for this fall, New York is so absolutely over your chunky accessories. Trade your wide belts for skinny ones and pawn whatever else you can for the hautest leather bag you can find (i.e. Chanel, duh).

Glamming up your look for the evening is all about dramatizing your make-up and finding the right pair of shoes. Whereas we’d prefer to see you in a pair of pumps, we figure you’ll be crawling all over the village in a less than sober state. The compromise? Throw a pair of ballet flats in the oversized bag we still can’t convince you to get rid of.

Peace,
Andrew

P.S. If it’s cold enough, we’re loving you in one of Louis Vuitton’s cropped ¾ length jackets paired with a long pair of leather gloves. Though, no matter what label you decide to wear, you’re doing all your last minute shopping on 5th avenue.
