BEAUTY: Calling All Kate Fans – British Supermodel Debuts Rimmel Lipstick Collection

In conjunction with Rimmel London, the cosmetics line she has represented for a decade now, supermodel Kate Moss has launched five Lasting Finish Lipsticks sure to please everyone from teen girls and daring fashionistas to conservative ladies who lunch. Known for her effortless rock ‘n roll chic both on and off the runway, Moss has created five glamorous colors that reflect the ‘easy to wear, classic shades’ she has ‘always worn and loved.’ The lip colors are presented in a matte black tube emblazoned with the fashion icon’s signature in bright red.

This comprehensive collection includes a shade for every skin tone and occasion. The lipsticks contain a Black Diamond Pigment Complex for radiant color, natural moisturizers to ensure the creamiest texture, and vitamins C and E to yield antioxidant protection. After seeing color swatches it is apparent that the colors are very true – they look the same on lips as they do in the tube, which is great given that Rimmel is a brand available in drugstores. Shade selection is as follows:

  • 01 – a deep brick red
  • 04 – a royal purple
  • 08 – a dusty rose
  • 12 – a candy coral
  • 14 – a blushed nude

The Kate Moss collection arrives on our side of the pond this month. The lipsticks will retail for under $10. What a fabulous way to begin 2012; get the London Look!

FASHION: Gwen Stefani Launches Harajuku Mini at Target

Last week, style icon Gwen Stefani launched a limited-run collection for Target. Called Harajuku Mini, it is inspired by Stefani’s other clothing lines and by her own personal sense of style.

Many fashionistas were disappointed to learn that the collection is only for kids – but, the children that get to don these duds are truly lucky!

The stylish Harajuku Mini collection is an offshoot of the line she did with Target last year called Harajuku Lovers. All of Ms. Stefani’s Harajuku work is inspired by the bold prints and patterns of the Harajuku District of Japan, which is one of the most revered and avant garde fashion capitals of the world. It boasts an electic mix of fashion-forward styles ranging from gothic to Lolita, visual kei, decora, Asian and tribal influences, and more.

The Harajuku Mini collection for Target features clothing for boys and girls, and includes animal-inspired hoodies, tutus, and plaid pants,  plus prints and graphics galore.

There is clothing for little kids up to the “tween” age. Gwen Stefani was quoted as saying, “Ultimately, with the tween line, I wanted them to feel cool and that they’re expressing themselves through their clothes — that’s what I always did. It’s a sensitive age. I was still really into Hello Kitty, but in a different way. I wanted to wear it with like, zippered skirts, but your parents still want you to be a little girl.”

About the collection as a whole, she also went on to say,  “When I get dressed in the morning, it’s a reflection of how I’m feeling that day, so when I first went to Japan and saw the Harajuku, I felt like, ‘How perfect — a catwalk for kids to go, ‘I want to be real and unique and express myself.’’ That’s the DNA of the line. It’s my style mixed with the way the Japanese dress their kids — a lot of clashing and mixing and things that you wouldn’t think go together. I wanted the Harajuku Mini collection to reflect that kookiness. I also got to put some of my signature styles through the years in: punker pants, plaid skirts, zippers. Target wanted all of it. This is really cute and really wearable. It’s so fun. I wanted it to look like all of my signature looks that I’ve done through the years, kind of for children. I wanted to bring fashion to kids.”

Stefani says that own two quite stylish boys helped her design the collection. “My kids have a big opinion about it,” she said.

Check out some of the best looks from the Harajuku Mini line as well as of Gwen at the launch for Target.

Fashion: Winter Trends -The Everlasting Ugg!

With fall in full swing and the winter months looming ahead, many people are looking for the hottest fashion for cold weather seasons. Indeed, every year the fashion market shifts, even if just a little bit, meaning that it is certainly a good idea for fashion-conscious people to keep an eye on designers and trends. One trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon, and which has been popular for many years now, is that of wearing boots that double as fashion items and pieces of warmth. For the most part, this trend is due to the explosive popularity of Ugg Boots, which have gained notoriety worldwide in recent years, having originated as unique Australian boot designs. Fans of these sorts of boots will be happy to know that there are a number of newer styles being offered by the brand this season.

One trend that seems to be occurring within the Ugg brand is the availability of taller boots. The classic Ugg style, which we’ve all seen on people for years now, is designed to go about midway up the shin, however, a few of Ugg’s newer boot offerings are designed to fit just below the knee, providing an entirely different look (as well as more leg warmth!). For examples of this new story, check out the Bomber Chestnut Over The Knee Bailey Boot, or the Lotus Brown Over The Knee Bailey Boot, which both have similar designs within this new style.

Ugg has also made some changes with newer styles that go the other way, in that they are lower than the classic style. In fact, some of the shorter new Ugg boots barely even resemble the classics or the knee boots, in that they have harder soles, and even heels in some instances. It can be great to grab a smaller pair of Uggs, like the Black Leather Lynnea Shearling Clog Boot, or any number of similar offerings, in order to give yourself more options with your footwear in the coming, colder months.

These are just a couple of styles in what has become actually quite an extensive collection offered by Ugg boots. The truth is, this brand name is so hot lately, and has been so popular for years now, that virtually anything they put out will be considered trendy and stylish, and will be picked up by thousands of customers. If you’re looking for some fashion compliments, or even just some new footwear this season, the Ugg collection is definitely a good one to keep your eye on. You can’t go wrong with a new pair of these famed boots.

Beauty: A True Beauty Professional: Celebrity Makeup Artist D’Angelo Thompson

As a makeup artist, continuing education is a life-long endeavor; that’s why last month I chose to attend a seminar with fabulous NYC-based makeup artist and hair stylist, D’Angelo Thompson, held at the MAKE UP FOR EVER boutique in Greenwich Village. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the moment he entered the room, one could immediately sense… a presence.

D'Angelo Thompson

D'Angelo Thompson

I’m not going to lie: the painfully competitive world of makeup artistry is one that is all-too-often tainted by cattiness, ego, and superficiality. You might expect to experience some of this with an artist as experienced as D’Angelo (two decades’ worth), but there was nothing to be found in his midst but humility, authenticity and candor. Frankly it was a privilege to be seated so close to him, and he was more than generous in sharing his wealth of knowledge. I listened with intent.

D’Angelo has earned quite a reputation: he’s worked with stars like Wendy Williams, Roseanne Barr, Laila Ali, Mario Lopez, Nicole “Snookie” Polizzi, the Backstreet Boys  and Daisy Fuentes, to name a few. As a versatile artist he has lent his skills to major motion pictures, TV commercials, national ad campaigns and publications, TV shows, theatrical productions, New York Fashion Week and more. A gem in this industry, he is accomplished at both makeup and hair styling, for which he has won an Emmy Award. You’d have to pry this information out of him, however; he’s not the type of artist who shouts, ‘notice me! I’m important!’ Rather, he draws you in with his impeccable charm, soothing demeanor and quiet confidence. Needless to say, it’s evident why his clients continue to book him.

D'Angelo Models

D'Angelo Models

For aspiring makeup artists, D’Angelo stresses the importance of diversity, branding, building quality relationships with photographers and fellow artists, savings and humility. He says that as a makeup artist, you are your own brand, and establishing strong business savvy is key to financial survival. D’Angelo mentions that it’s crucial to pay attention and use gentle care and respect while doing a client’s makeup/hair.  Also, “if makeup isn’t your passion,” he  advises, “then you should think twice about choosing it as a career.” If you ever have the opportunity to hear D’Angelo speak, I highly recommend it. He is an amazing educator, motivational speaker, business man and artist.

Last but not least, I asked D’Angelo to name five products he feels are essential to have in one’s makeup kit. He recommends:

Lip Stai 1.      LIP STAIN: D’Angelo likes the Sephora Lush Flush Lip & Cheek Stain in Red Wine. This is a great product to layer under lipstick and gloss for long-lasting color, perfect for brides.

Eye Drops2.       EYE DROPS: Blood shot eyes are a no-no.

Foundation Brush3.       FOUNDATION BRUSH: This tool yields a flawless makeup application.

Cetaphil4.       CETAPHIL LOTION: A gentle lotion that acts as a substitute for makeup primer and works on all skin types.

Bronzer5.       BRONZER: A medium to dark matte shade is universally flattering.

“Be THAT Woman!” – Fitness, Fashion, Function: An Interview with Kelly Dooley of BodyRock Sport

“BodyRockers are those women who walk into a room and electrify it with their confidence. Be that woman.”

Recently I had the opportunity to interview owner and creator of BodyRock Sport, Kelly Dooley. An inspiring and powerful force in the fashion and fitness industries, Kelly is a fearless example of bringing your vision to life. Please enjoy.

How did you get into the industry? Can you tell me how your company started?

In 2008, my New Year’s Resolution was to run a marathon. I signed up for The Walt Disney Marathon, which was in Orlando in January 2009. When I went to pick up my race packet at the expo the day before my big day, I was searching for a sports bra that was fun, funky and functional. I never found my dreams sports bra at that expo, but I did have my aha moment. I vividly remember thinking, “I need to create a line of sports bras that are equally fashionable and functional, and that transition easily from day-to-night.” Once I returned to NYC, I developed my business plan, concept book, design gallery and set January 1, 2010 as my target launch date. So, basically, BodyRock Sport was born out of a huge void in the market to serve women like myself who love fitness and fashion but who don’t want to sacrifice one for the other.

Aside from online, where can we find your merchandise?

In many boutiques nationwide, though we are mostly on the east coast currently. Some of our boutiques include S Factor, Sports Club LA, Reebok Sports Club, Tight Assets, Follow the Sun, and many more.

I see that you have quite a range as far as the price points go. Tell us what factors influenced this decision.

For the most part, our collection is considered very expensive for activewear. Interestingly, our bras and other pieces cost more to make that many other activewear brands’ retail prices! There is no question that we are one of, if not the most fashion-forward activewear brands in the world, yet each piece is equally functional, which is what sets us apart from the crowd. Despite the fact that we are considered to be a luxury activewear brand, it is also important for us to create pieces that are easily accessible to our diverse demographic, which ranges from little girls to much older women. We want to create for all women who love fitness and fashion, and want to reinforce that BodyRock Sport is a lifestyle brand in that we enable women to express a lifestyle that they already live by providing them with the most beautiful and well-designed activewear in the market.

What’s your can’t-live-without workout item?

The Sophie Bra from The Zip ‘em Up Collection. I live in this bra. Whether I wear it to hot yoga, to run errands, or on a date with my fiancee, I love how easy it is to incorporate The Sophie Bra into my wardrobe. The floral print Supplex, metallic gold zipper, fuchsia Swarovski crystals and gold studs make this bra sexy, feminine and edgy.

What sets your sports bras and other sportswear apart from other brands?

It’s funny. Every time I go into a sports store, I can never find anything that I want to buy except for running shoes and the occasional headband. Most of what’s out there is very generic. Also, the fashionable activewear usually lacks functionality and vice versa. So much thought goes into each and every one of our designs, and because I am such a diehard athlete (and I love FASHION), I rigorously test every piece before going into production to ensure that we create a collection that people will LOVE.  As I said before, and I will say again, BodyRock Sport fuses fitness, fashion and functionality in a way that has not been done before. I design for women who LOVE being women, for those who believe that we were born to stand out, for those who want to look and feel beautiful 24/7. That alone makes us a maverick in this industry.

What are your personal wardrobe staples, that you feel every woman should own?

A Chanel jumbo bag (I have apple green, purple and gray)

A big pair of sunglasses (my favorites are Marc Jacobs and Gucci)

An abundance of white and black tanks

Miu Miu flats

Giuseppi Zanotti stilettos

A fabulous pair of gold earrings (one of my favorite pairs are from Chanel’s Shanghai collection….also another favorite pair is

Kelly Pink gold Hummingbird earrings by KnightandHammerMuse.com

They have definitely become a staple in my wardrobe!)

An abundance of sexy BodyRock Sport bras, particularly The Dim Your Headlights Collection and The ZIp ‘em Up Collection

A versatile leather jacket (though I have many, my favorite is by Temperley London–it is gray with gold pyramid studs)

One pair of ripped jeans (like Current & Elliott) and one pair of colorful skinny jeans (Robin’s are by far my favorite brand).

What is your favorite way to exercise and/or stay in shape?

Hot yoga, boxing, and triathlons dominate my life!

Where do you get your inspirations? Your stuff is so unique!

First of all, thank you very much for the compliment. My goal is to make women feel beautiful and confident about themselves, so every design has that purpose in mind.

I draw inspiration from many places, but most of my ideas come to me while I am sleeping or taking a shower. I also have a unique group of girlfriends, who inspire me in many ways, particularly when it comes designing prints, new silhouettes, and choosing distinctive embellishments. Most of the pieces in my collection are named after different amazing women in my life who have touched me in some way.

Would you say that the new “femme fatale” is one who works out and is strong physically, without being a “tomboy” or “jock?” If so, what or whom do you think has changed this perception?

Yes, I would definitely agree that the new “femme fatale” is one who works out and is strong! I think many women have changed this perception, but I give major kudos to celebs like Halle Berry, Jessica Biel and Jennifer Aniston, all of whom are fit, healthy and beautiful.

Who are your Fashion & Style role models? Fitness role models?

FASHION AND STYLE ROLE MODELS:

Jennifer Lopez

FITNESS MODELS:

Agostina Laneri

Tell us –  any celebrity fans of your line? And, we must ask – what kind of woman wears your “luxury items”?  With today’s economy, some may be offended by a $20,000 sports bra.

The Kardashians

Kendall Jenner

J Woww

Knicks City Dancers

Maria Menounos

Certain people get offended by everything. And that’s fine with me. The Eternal Love Bra is not necessarily something that is meant to be purchased. It’s more symbolic of what we stand for than anything else. Every year, I collaborate with Joseph Knight of Knight & Hammer (www.knightandhammer.com) to design a stand out item that represents my insatiable love for fitness, fashion and the finer things in life. The Eternal Love Bra is a collector’s item–truly a piece of art that was designed with the utmost purpose and passion. I am not worried about those who don’t “get it” because so many do!

Where do you see BodyRock in 5 years? 10?  What’s next for you and your brand?

My longterm goal is to become the amazon of edgy activewear. Within 5 years, we will undoubtedly be a global brand.

Within 1 year, we will be available in department stores. Also, we are currently developing the world’s first fashionable mastectomy bra to market for post-Mastectomy and post-cancer surgery patients by addressing their unique needs called The Empower ‘em Collection.  One key element is providing a product that adapts to the changing body shape of women as they go through reconstruction and beyond. For cancer patients that seek to thrive, a sports bra that shifts from “cleavage to coverage’ is likely to meet their expectations and incent them to exercise, a critical part of their recovery. This collection will be available in October, and reinforces our desire to empower all women to look and feel their best all the time. Stay tuned for more exciting details! I am very, very excited about this particular collection and the impact it will have one women whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. For each bra that is purchased, we will be donating one to a woman in need.

What’s been your “most maniac moment” in life thus far? Something bold or daring that you did, funny or embarrassing, outlandish or fun? Do share!

I have wanted to live in NYC since I was a little girl. Being from California, my Mom did not want me to move to NYC because she feared I would never return. NYU was the only school I applied to for graduate school, and I remember my Mom telling me not to put all my eggs in one basket, but I said, “If I don’t get accepted, I will apply again next year.” In retrospect, it’s crazy to think that I only applied to one school. But I am so glad that I did–I am truly living my dream and remind myself of that every day.

Risk-Taker Lady Gaga Wins CFDA Fashion Honor for being Top Style Icon

This past Monday evening brought the fashion elite to NYC for the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards dinner and ceremony.

This chic crowd wowed with their outfits, and Lady Gaga won an award for “Top Style Icon” of the year.

The singer, performance artist, and pop culture icon is just as known for her outrageous, outlandish, and unbelievable ensembles as she is for her musical stylings.

Humbled by the award, Gaga accepted tearfully and gave a heartfelt speech on stage.

“All of you made me feel like a star before I was,” she told the audience at Lincoln Center — an audience which consisted of Marc Jacobs, Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, the Olsen twins, Anderson Cooper, Kanye West, and many, many more esteemed names and faces.

Lady Gaga spoke on the importance of art and fashion in her life. She compared fashion as a sort of pathway that led to self-discovery, artistry, and, most importantly, confidence. As a teen, she said, she would save money in order to buy vintage Thierry Mugler pieces from a neighborhood thrift shop, and she planned her outfits for Friday night parties, “as if she were going to the Oscars.”

“As much as this award means to me personally … I just want you to know how much this means to young Americans,” Gaga said, adorned in a corset get-up by Mugler. She got some laughs as she told a story about the moment she found out she won the Top Style Icon award. She got a text message from industry goddess Anna Wintour telling her that she was picked for the prize. Gaga thought the message was from a friend named Anna, and replied with a typical Gaga “bleep-worthy” response. The text back from the Vogue editor-in-chief said, “How lovely.”

Designer Michael Kors said that he always enjoys this event because he likes being surrounded with “people who have a passion for fashion,” as Lady Gaga truly does.

He summed it up simply: “Tonight is about not only people who make the clothes, but also the photographers, writers and the people who wear the clothes.”

After all, isn’t that what fashion is all about?

Prints Charming – Mixing Patterns Like a Pro

A hot trend right now is pattern mixing – but how can you learn to mix prints and not look like a clown?

Here are some simple tips to abide by in order to make sure that your mix-and-matchin’ is still in fashion!

1.) Pick colors in the same family, or, colors that are at least complementary.
2.) Make sure that the mixed prints are distinct enough from one another.
3.) Try to stick to 2 or 3 patterns — too many more and you will look like you chose your clothes with your eyes closed.
4.) Vary the scale of the prints, if you can. For example – a large floral print with subtle, thin pinstripes.
5.) When mixing patterns, go light on accessories…..your outfit will steal the show.
6.) Most importantly, rock that outfit with CONFIDENCE!

Here are some inspirations for you to get started …enjoy some looks from Proenza Schouler, Roberto Cavalli, Prada, Forever 21, and more…

Perfect Beauty Product for NYC: Chanel Nail Polish in Black Velvet

There are few things as sultry as black velvet, so why not incorporate some of it into your beauty regime?   Chanel’s polish is a matte black shade that applies with all the smoothness of a glossy polish.

NYC is notorious for loving all black everything – black nails look polished and sophisticated, especially in a this formula, which goes on looking almost like rubber.    This is definitely a must-have for polish lovers everywhere – it’s definitely worth the splurge.
