FASHION: Gwen Stefani Launches Harajuku Mini at Target

Last week, style icon Gwen Stefani launched a limited-run collection for Target. Called Harajuku Mini, it is inspired by Stefani’s other clothing lines and by her own personal sense of style.

Many fashionistas were disappointed to learn that the collection is only for kids – but, the children that get to don these duds are truly lucky!

The stylish Harajuku Mini collection is an offshoot of the line she did with Target last year called Harajuku Lovers. All of Ms. Stefani’s Harajuku work is inspired by the bold prints and patterns of the Harajuku District of Japan, which is one of the most revered and avant garde fashion capitals of the world. It boasts an electic mix of fashion-forward styles ranging from gothic to Lolita, visual kei, decora, Asian and tribal influences, and more.

The Harajuku Mini collection for Target features clothing for boys and girls, and includes animal-inspired hoodies, tutus, and plaid pants,  plus prints and graphics galore.

There is clothing for little kids up to the “tween” age. Gwen Stefani was quoted as saying, “Ultimately, with the tween line, I wanted them to feel cool and that they’re expressing themselves through their clothes — that’s what I always did. It’s a sensitive age. I was still really into Hello Kitty, but in a different way. I wanted to wear it with like, zippered skirts, but your parents still want you to be a little girl.”

About the collection as a whole, she also went on to say,  “When I get dressed in the morning, it’s a reflection of how I’m feeling that day, so when I first went to Japan and saw the Harajuku, I felt like, ‘How perfect — a catwalk for kids to go, ‘I want to be real and unique and express myself.’’ That’s the DNA of the line. It’s my style mixed with the way the Japanese dress their kids — a lot of clashing and mixing and things that you wouldn’t think go together. I wanted the Harajuku Mini collection to reflect that kookiness. I also got to put some of my signature styles through the years in: punker pants, plaid skirts, zippers. Target wanted all of it. This is really cute and really wearable. It’s so fun. I wanted it to look like all of my signature looks that I’ve done through the years, kind of for children. I wanted to bring fashion to kids.”

Stefani says that own two quite stylish boys helped her design the collection. “My kids have a big opinion about it,” she said.

SHAY TODD Runway Show at Miami Swim Week

Hosted at the Villa Vecchia estate of Norma Quintero in Miami, designer Shay Todd showcased her 2012 Resort and Swimwear collection to editors, bloggers, fashion fans, socialites and celeb gal pals, Maria Menounos and Adrienne Bailon. The runway models channeled Princess Laia braids with 70’s inspired runway looks such as cover-ups, drapey cowl-necks and kaftans in muted earth-tones with splashes of deep reds.

Backstage at the Shay Todd show, Maria Menounos told the designer that she was “excited about the Shay Todd hip hugging bathing suit bottoms that closely resembled her favorite hanky panky underwear brand.” The Access Hollywood star then proceeded to lift her little black dress to expose her hip hugging underwear for the designer to see.

At the close of the show, designer Shay Todd sported a “proud mom” kind of smile as she walked down her runway closing off of her successful Miami Swim Week runway show.

One-time MANIAC Cover Girl Kristen Cavallari Models GLASS Bikini for Diesel and SKYY!

Former Maniac Magazine cover girl and “The Hills” star, Kristin Cavallari recently rocked the Diesel runway in a cobalt blue glass bikini to celebrate opening night of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim yesterday at the Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach. The recently-engaged Cavallari claimed that she was nervous about modeling in a bikini and spent weeks at the gym to prepare. “This is the first time I have ever walked a runway in a bathing suit,” Cavallari tells PEOPLE Magazine. “The glass sort of cut into my skin, and I was really nervous.” The former MTV reality TV diva knocked ‘em dead as she strutted her stuff down the runway in a bold cobalt blue, one-shouldered bikini made with…yes, glass!

The glass swimsuit was designed by Diesel and inspired by SKYY Vodka’s iconic blue glass bottle.

Work it, girl! (…just be careful!)

Best Beauty product for Miami: Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in “Celebrate”

If there was ever a city that embraced the phrase “go big or go home” , it’s Miami.  When you’re there, nothing is too bright or bold.  In order to really stand out amongst the clubgoers of Miami, you’re really going to have to up the ante.

One of the only beauty products that seems fun and flashy enough for this vibe is this hyper-pigmented shadow pencil for Nars.  It’s lime green in color, and because it comes in a stick, you can really control how much or how little goes on.  Lime green isn’t the easiest shade to work with, but it’s anything but boring.  And if you’d rather take a baby step into the world of neon makeup, you can always start off with the same pencil in Palladium, a bright blue shade.

Prime 112

If you’re planning on dining at the famous Prime 112, don’t expect to get a table easily.  What you can expect?  To pull out your camera phone a few times because you’re bound to run into a few celebrities while you dine.

Stars like Hilary Duff, Kim Kardashian, and Enrique Iglesias are fans of the steakhouse, which is famous for its hearty portions.  Be sure to sample menu standouts like bleu-cheese stuffed olives and truffle lobster macaroni and cheese.   The pricey eatery boasts a full bar (dirty martinis are a must) – it’s not cheap, though, and patrons are discouraged from bringing children.

Get the Miami Look: Beachy Chic

Miami is known as the city where the heat is on.  The city’s nightclubs rival the infamous bashes that take go on around the clock in exotic places like Ibiza and Mykonos.

Miami’s vibe is all about energy and glamour, but the city’s signature look is decidedly casual.  Miami’s hippest spend their days on the beaches and their nights in the clubs, and their outfits reflect this.

Miami lover Shakira is the fashion inspiration behind this guide to Miami style.  When in Rome (or in the case, Miami), she dresses as the “Romans” do, trading her glam duds for the beachy chic look.  Some of her Miami wardrobe staples?

Slouchy tees: Nothing says “trying too hard” like a skintight tee.  Oversized, tissue-thin shirts lend any outfit that slightly bohemian look that is so right for this city.

Distressed denim: Jeans strike the perfect balance between polished and haphazard, and a few holes and shreds only make them even more alluring.  Distressing works on skinnies, boot-cut jeans, and denim mini skirts, but if you really want to embody the vibe of Miami fashion, invest in a great-fitting pair of shredded jean shorts – the shorter the better.

Funky patterns: Capture the energy of Miami with bold printed items.  I love T-bags from their offbeat, geometric prints and liberal use of bright colors.  Miami is the one place where it isn’t acceptable to wear too much black, so look for vibrant pieces.   When you’re here, it’s totally acceptable to break out he tie-dyed tee you’ve been hiding in your closet.

Dress Accordingly in Miami

Maniacs,
Your Miami style is going to be highly Latin inspired and should include a variety of flirtatious colors and luxurious accessories. This is truly the fashion melting pot. It’s here that you can mix and match the select styles I’ve had you pick up throughout your Jet Set Fall.

When doing it Big Willie style in South Beach (ha…), I want you to channel KLS a la draped dresses, shirred bust lines, and elasticized bottom hems. Miami is hella haute and I don’t just mean the clothes. Their falls may as well be our summers so leave the jackets and tights where they belong.

Your day look should be as playful as it is contagious. Feel free to experiment with structured shorts, flirty tanks, halter blouses, and wide leg trousers in light linens. Your accessories should keep with fall ’08 traditions. Stay along the lines of a skinny belt or even dainty chains and pendants.

At night, let your hair down, darken the shadow, and throw on that easy draped dress. With the right satin clutch (i.e. Juicy or Marc), you could even recycle your short and blouse combo from earlier that day. Regardless, I want to see your Steve Maddens loud and proud.

Peace,
Andrew

P.S. Just because I gave you the green light on the shorts and elasticized bottom hem dress doesn’t mean I want to see booty all up and down South Beach.
