FASHION: Gwen Stefani Launches Harajuku Mini at Target

Last week, style icon Gwen Stefani launched a limited-run collection for Target. Called Harajuku Mini, it is inspired by Stefani’s other clothing lines and by her own personal sense of style.

Many fashionistas were disappointed to learn that the collection is only for kids – but, the children that get to don these duds are truly lucky!

The stylish Harajuku Mini collection is an offshoot of the line she did with Target last year called Harajuku Lovers. All of Ms. Stefani’s Harajuku work is inspired by the bold prints and patterns of the Harajuku District of Japan, which is one of the most revered and avant garde fashion capitals of the world. It boasts an electic mix of fashion-forward styles ranging from gothic to Lolita, visual kei, decora, Asian and tribal influences, and more.

The Harajuku Mini collection for Target features clothing for boys and girls, and includes animal-inspired hoodies, tutus, and plaid pants,  plus prints and graphics galore.

There is clothing for little kids up to the “tween” age. Gwen Stefani was quoted as saying, “Ultimately, with the tween line, I wanted them to feel cool and that they’re expressing themselves through their clothes — that’s what I always did. It’s a sensitive age. I was still really into Hello Kitty, but in a different way. I wanted to wear it with like, zippered skirts, but your parents still want you to be a little girl.”

About the collection as a whole, she also went on to say,  “When I get dressed in the morning, it’s a reflection of how I’m feeling that day, so when I first went to Japan and saw the Harajuku, I felt like, ‘How perfect — a catwalk for kids to go, ‘I want to be real and unique and express myself.’’ That’s the DNA of the line. It’s my style mixed with the way the Japanese dress their kids — a lot of clashing and mixing and things that you wouldn’t think go together. I wanted the Harajuku Mini collection to reflect that kookiness. I also got to put some of my signature styles through the years in: punker pants, plaid skirts, zippers. Target wanted all of it. This is really cute and really wearable. It’s so fun. I wanted it to look like all of my signature looks that I’ve done through the years, kind of for children. I wanted to bring fashion to kids.”

Stefani says that own two quite stylish boys helped her design the collection. “My kids have a big opinion about it,” she said.

Fashion: Winter Trends -The Everlasting Ugg!

With fall in full swing and the winter months looming ahead, many people are looking for the hottest fashion for cold weather seasons. Indeed, every year the fashion market shifts, even if just a little bit, meaning that it is certainly a good idea for fashion-conscious people to keep an eye on designers and trends. One trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon, and which has been popular for many years now, is that of wearing boots that double as fashion items and pieces of warmth. For the most part, this trend is due to the explosive popularity of Ugg Boots, which have gained notoriety worldwide in recent years, having originated as unique Australian boot designs. Fans of these sorts of boots will be happy to know that there are a number of newer styles being offered by the brand this season.

One trend that seems to be occurring within the Ugg brand is the availability of taller boots. The classic Ugg style, which we’ve all seen on people for years now, is designed to go about midway up the shin, however, a few of Ugg’s newer boot offerings are designed to fit just below the knee, providing an entirely different look (as well as more leg warmth!). For examples of this new story, check out the Bomber Chestnut Over The Knee Bailey Boot, or the Lotus Brown Over The Knee Bailey Boot, which both have similar designs within this new style.

Ugg has also made some changes with newer styles that go the other way, in that they are lower than the classic style. In fact, some of the shorter new Ugg boots barely even resemble the classics or the knee boots, in that they have harder soles, and even heels in some instances. It can be great to grab a smaller pair of Uggs, like the Black Leather Lynnea Shearling Clog Boot, or any number of similar offerings, in order to give yourself more options with your footwear in the coming, colder months.

These are just a couple of styles in what has become actually quite an extensive collection offered by Ugg boots. The truth is, this brand name is so hot lately, and has been so popular for years now, that virtually anything they put out will be considered trendy and stylish, and will be picked up by thousands of customers. If you’re looking for some fashion compliments, or even just some new footwear this season, the Ugg collection is definitely a good one to keep your eye on. You can’t go wrong with a new pair of these famed boots.

California Dreamin’: Local Clothing Store’s Summer Fashion Show by Matthew Hacke

On Saturday July 16th, Pittsburgh’s Southside neighborhood seemed to transform itself into a tropical oasis at Diesel Club Lounge.  Fashion gazers from all over came to Diesel to see a fashion show put on by local clothing store Reflect.

Owned and operated by Kristy Picard and Jenn Lementowski since November of 2010, the Robinson Township store offers an extensive collection of men’s and women’s clothing that boasts a California chic vibe.  Kristy, 23, a graduate of La Roche College and Jenn, 25, a graduate of Duquesne University, both met and became close friends after working at Michael Kors at Ross Park Mall. After working there for a year, they decided that they wanted to open their own store together.  “We wanted to open a store that offered clothing not easily accessible in Pittsburgh, particularly a store featuring young West Coast designers, ninety percent of which our store is made up of,” Kristy said.  “We travel to fashion trade shows in Las Vegas and select clothes for our store that other local boutiques and clothing stores in the area do not have or have a very limited amount of. That is what makes our store unique,” added Jenn.

The fashion show Kristy and Jenn produced, aptly titled “An L.A. Affair” showcased their store’s summer collections.  This was not the first fashion show put on by these store owners, but it was their first all-ages gathering.  The theme of the show was a mix of L.A. nightlife with the laid back feeling of a party on the beach.  The stage, adorned with Hawaiian décor and synchronized with some of the current top forty club tunes, spun by DJ Tweak, exuded this concept.  As the show began, the models, including Maniac’s own resident blogger Ashley Boynes-Shuck, strutted down the runway in some of the season’s hottest trends and summer staples. The women’s attire ranged from exotic and animal printed swimsuits to jersey-knit and jewel encrusted cocktail dresses paired with strappy sandals and nude patent leather pumps. The men’s attire ranged from jeans and California inspired t-shirts to blazers and gingham print dress shirts.  The show ended with a performance by rap artist Choze, who got even the models dancing up on stage! All in all, this show, a three-month process in the making, had everyone feeling like they were “California Dreamin’.”

One of the many great things about this local show was that Kristy and Jenn also made sure to support a wonderful cause near and dear to their hearts.  A portion of the show’s proceeds as well as donations were given to the Bracco Children’s Fund.  This fund was set up for the children of their friend and founder of Pittsburgh Fashion Magazine, Nicholas T. Bracco III, who passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 2, 2011. “He is survived by his wife Julie and their five children, ranging in age from fourteen to three and this was just a way to give back to his family by giving to this college fund set up for his young children,” said Kristy. Giving back ultimately made the night that much more special.

After this show, the future for Reflect looks brighter than the California sunshine.  “Our next big venture is looking into expanding our store,” said Jenn. “Fort Lauderdale Florida is up on our list,” added Kristy.  Just like their growing store, both Jenn and Kristy can agree on one thing, that the Pittsburgh fashion scene has come a long way. “It is evolving in such a way here in Pittsburgh that people are finally experimenting with clothing trends and taking fashion more seriously, which is great to see,” said Kristy.

The Real Housewives of Style: 15 Highs and Lows of the Reality Divas

I confess: one of my all-time guilty pleasures are the Real Housewives shows on the Bravo network. As someone who not-so-secretly DVRs and watches every installment of the series, I’ve come to notice the many, many highs and lows of style with each unique cast.

I decided to compile my Top 15 “must-see” looks from these lovely ladies. Now, keep in mind that while some are absolutely fabulous, “must-see” doesn’t necessarily mean….good. So, take a look at these Real Housewives highs and lows of style, and feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts.

Best Beauty Product for LA: Benefit Bella Bamba Blush

Bronzer is great and all, but sometimes a pop of vibrant color is even more alluring.   Coral and rose blushes are pretty, but I’ve found something even more fun and flattering.  And it’ll definitely ensure that you way better than that perfectly bronzed goddess that all the guys have been ogling on Rodeo Drive.

Benefit has just come out with a hot pink blush that looks amazing on virtually any skin tone.  Packed with subtle gold shimmer, this blush sculpts cheekbones and brightens the entire face.  It’s the perfect one-step product that does the job of both blush and bronzer.  And the best part of this gorgeous product?  It smells like watermelon!

The Ivy

If you’ve watched any reality TV in the last few years (don’t pretend you haven’t), you’ve definitely heard of the The Ivy.   While the name conjures up images of a tranquil spot in the middle of a country, all white wicker and growing vines – the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.  The Ivy sits in one of the world’s most bustling cities.  While there you’re likely to run into some of Hollywood’s hottest – Sienna miller, Kelly Osbourne, and Kristin Cavallari are among the young stars who count The Ivy as favorite of theirs.  And you’ll definitely run into a paparazzo or two, as there’s a perpetual wall of flashing lights outside The Ivy’s infamous doors.

This eatery’s menu earns as much acclaim as its clientele: the menu is heavy on seafood – from tuna tarare to lobster ravioli – but of course in the city of size zeroes, the salads are the main attraction.   And if you’re there, you absolutely can’t eave without sampling one of The Ivy’s famous gimlets – iced tea with mint is available for teetotalers.

Get the LA look: Extravagant and Eclectic

The city of angels  is known for its excess, and the fashion of the city is indicative of this.  Celebs are constantly spotted sporting outfits that cost more than a normal American’s entire paycheck: here, paying huge sums of money for a simple t shirt is anything but unheard of.

Still, there’s something uncalculated about the way LA residents put themselves together.  Slouchy silhouettes are big here, as are bold accessories.  One star who nails it every time?  Kristin Cavallari.  We’ve seen K Cav come a long way: she’s gone from an all-American high school girl who lived in jeans and solid tank tops to a bona fide fashion-forward LA icon.  So what’s in her closet these days?

Skinny jeans: Because what’s the point in hiding months of slaving away on the elliptical only to hide those gorgeous legs under a pair of baggy jeans?   Fashionistas have been claiming that wide-leg pants have made a major comeback for years now, but the proof isn’t quite in the pudding yet: LA girls still seem to favor their tapered denim over everything else.

Cardigans: It can get a little chilly at night, and a soft, thin cardigan is a perfect topper.   Shorter styles work great over shorts and skirts, while knee-grazing sweaters add a whole new element when worn over leggings and tunics.

Oversized bags:  The bigger the better.  Carry one slung casually over one arm for maximum effect.  Want to really make a splash?  Find a great, sturdy bag in an unexpected color, like orange or lime green.  Rebecca Minkoff’s bags really embody the spirit of LA.

Huge sunglasses: Accessories in LA are generally best when super-sized.  A pair that obscured most of your face is probably your best option – just don’t be alarmed if the paparazzi mistake you for one of your favorite celebs.

Sparkly sandals: Capture the city’s glam factor by letting your feet to the talking.  Flat sandals with delicate rhinestone detailing look so pretty on tanned feet – Stuart Weitzman does them best,

Phillppe’s Diner in Los Angeles

If you find that you need a break from the fast-paced glamour of L.A. (or that your wallet needs a break), stop by Phillppe’s.  The small diner, located at 1001 N Alameda Street, was established in 1908 and is now a historic landmark.  Enjoy one of their famous French dip sandwiches and their 9¢ coffee while you take advantage of their free wi-fi.  You may never want to leave.

Christina Aguilera Receives a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Christina Aguilera received the Hollywood Walk of Fame’s 2,423rd star on November 15th, 2010. In an interview with The Associated Press before Monday’s unveiling, Aguilera said getting the star is “pretty surreal.”

The 29-year-old singer was still a teenager when she won her first Grammy in 1999, for best new artist. She has collected three more in the years since then.

Christina went for an innocent, Marilyn-inspired look in a tight white spaghetti strap dress and loose curls, spicing up her look with a pair of leopard print heels.

Dress Accordingly In Los Angeles

Maniacs,
Cali girls are all about rocking to their own beat while keeping their look hella relaxed. Dresses get shorter as sunglasses get bigger, and the trends change almost as much as Shannen Doherty gets kicked off television.

Los Angeles is so totally the land of that H&M shirt you’ve been pretending is a dress- except here, you can actually get away with it. Lucky for you, the fall ’08 season is completely 60’s inspired, so once again you can hold on to your babydoll and shift dresses.

To mix up the look, trade in some of your jumpers for dresses with more interesting sleeve and necklines. We’re loving flutter and batwing sleeves as well as bow necks and tiering ruffles. Match any of these styles with a cute pair of flats and you’re out the door.

Nightlife is tres simple because, with only a few minor adjustments, you can pretty much get away with your day look. Smudge your eyeliner, throw on a fitted jacket (i.e. Chloé or Miss Sixty), and switch your day flats to ones that have a little bit of sparkle or even some hardware. Done.

And OK, whereas I’d hate to admit it, Lauren Conrad’s new fall ’08 collection is actually ridiculously perfect for our L.A. girls. You should probably check it out if you’re still looking for inspiration. Thank you Teen Vogue.

Peace,
Andrew

P.S. Your Los Angeles staple accessory is still a leather bag- and as far as we’re concerned it had better be Marc Jacobs. His store is on Melrose. Go there.
