M-I-C-K-E-Y- M-O-U-S-E….

When we think of Walt Disney, the first thought that comes to mind is a mouse named Mickey.  We all grew up watching Disney movies, the Mickey Mouse Club and couldn’t wait for our first trip to Disneyland or Disneyworld.  It’s hard to believe that Mickey Mouse will turn 84 years old this November!  Even though Mickey and his gang have been around for over 80 years, the Disney brand continues to create trends – even in today’s fashion industry.

Designer Marc Jacobs created a Mickey Mouse headband that retailed for $650. The headband is black with two furry puff balls attached to each side.  This headband gives a modern look from the old Mickey or Minnie ears you can buy at Disney theme parks.  Another high-end designer, Jeremy Scott, designed a Mickey Mouse inspired military helmet.  The helmet was so hot that Rihanna wore it in her music video for “Hard.”  Scott also designed Lady Gaga’s Mickey Mouse outfit for her video, “Paparazzi.”

Retail stores like Urban Outfitters, Forever 21 and H&M have also recently carried Mickey Mouse inspired clothing.  In 2009, model Chanel Iman found her inner mouse, as she was featured in Vogue Germany wearing Minnie Mouse ears and clothing.  In the latest edition of Elle France, photographer David Burton captures Heather Marks throughout Disneyland.  The spread is a beautiful mix of childish memories with an adult edge.  One can’t help but feel inspired by these photos to find your inner child and imagination.

Walt Disney said it best in 1954, “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse.”

TREND ALERT: It’s cold outside but these trends are HOT!

The holiday season is over and it’s the time of year when the snow starts to fall and in most areas the sun is seldom seen.  You can find great deals on winter clothes at stores all over as they begin to bring out their spring clothing lines.  As I write this blog and look out my window to see the snow pouring out of the sky, I was excited to find new bright colored clothing and accessories from J. Crew!

Some of my favorite brightly colored clothing and accessories are The Toothpick Jean which comes in a rainbow of awesome colors including neon persimmon, light citron, blue grotto, festival green and bright papaya.  I also love the Tippi Sweater it’s so classic looking with the crewneck and can be worn in numerous ways. It’s made from merino wool and comes in twelve different colors such as neon azalea, bright plum and vibrant flame.  We all love heels, but there are times when a flat shoe is necessary.  Check out J. Crew’s Classic Leather Ballet Flats, they go perfect with the toothpick jeans and also come in a variety of colors.  They also added more padding to the shoe, so it’s super comfy!  To complete the outfit, lastly I like the iconic Bubble Necklace.  J. Crew has brought back their statement necklace in four staple colors including turquoise, sweet papaya, black and modern red.

Even though winter is officially here and going to be sticking around for a few more months, it’s not too early to stock up on the new clothing trends for your spring wardrobe!  The future looks bright!

BEAUTY: Calling All Kate Fans – British Supermodel Debuts Rimmel Lipstick Collection

In conjunction with Rimmel London, the cosmetics line she has represented for a decade now, supermodel Kate Moss has launched five Lasting Finish Lipsticks sure to please everyone from teen girls and daring fashionistas to conservative ladies who lunch. Known for her effortless rock ‘n roll chic both on and off the runway, Moss has created five glamorous colors that reflect the ‘easy to wear, classic shades’ she has ‘always worn and loved.’ The lip colors are presented in a matte black tube emblazoned with the fashion icon’s signature in bright red.

This comprehensive collection includes a shade for every skin tone and occasion. The lipsticks contain a Black Diamond Pigment Complex for radiant color, natural moisturizers to ensure the creamiest texture, and vitamins C and E to yield antioxidant protection. After seeing color swatches it is apparent that the colors are very true – they look the same on lips as they do in the tube, which is great given that Rimmel is a brand available in drugstores. Shade selection is as follows:

  • 01 – a deep brick red
  • 04 – a royal purple
  • 08 – a dusty rose
  • 12 – a candy coral
  • 14 – a blushed nude

The Kate Moss collection arrives on our side of the pond this month. The lipsticks will retail for under $10. What a fabulous way to begin 2012; get the London Look!

FASHION: Work Your Style – Even in the Winter!

Winter is here and it’s time to pull out cozy sweaters, furry boots and coats of all colors. Winter doesn’t mean you have to forgo your style! It’s a time to be creative with layers, wear a daring thigh high boot or to see how many different ways you can wear your favorite scarf. This season there are many winter trends that will keep you warm and fashionable.

One of the biggest trends for winter is Peplum Blazers, Coast and Vest with whittled-in-at-the-waist silhouettes. We love the belted waist – you can still keep your ladylike curves and not look like a puff ball. The belted waist also can be done with multiple layers so you can keep warm while looking fashionable.

On the weekends when the temperature drops and the snow starts to fall it can be hard to want to wear something other then leggings, jeans and a sweatshirt. However this winter season (lucky for us!) cozy sweaters and maxiskirts are the great winter combo. Again layers can be worn under the maxiskirt and sweater and they can be accessorized with belts and scarves. Whose says you can’t wear a sexy winter outfit while feeling like you’re still cozy in your sheets?

Lastly our favorite winter trend is Plaid! Plaid has been a staple in the winter wardrobe for years. It’s so versatile and can be worn on shirts, hats, pants and even boots. It can be rocked out with another plaid (although don’t overdo it or you can end up looking like a lumberjack) or with a bold solid.

Have fun this winter with your clothes and don’t be afraid to try out new trends. This winter we dare you to unleash your winter maniac!

FASHION: WE LOVE – Dangle Earrings!

It’s that time of year again when every other night there is some kind of party to attend.  I went to a corporate holiday party this past weekend and was obsessed with my latest fashion accessory – dangle earrings!

I wore a red silk dress that was some what low cut in the front.  I didn’t want to wear a necklace because of how the cut in the front was, but I didn’t want to look bare and not wear any jewelry.  I was shopping around for the perfect earrings and I found them at Express.  They were gold and diamond dangle earrings that almost touched my shoulders when I put them on.  I wore my hair half back with curls and the earnings made such a statement, I didn’t have to worry about a necklace or a lot more other pieces.  I did wear 3 gold bracelets, which I also purchased at Express.  The earrings and bracelets were a great team and made the outfit look very rich.  I received so many compliments about the earrings; I knew I needed to write about them in today’s fashion blog.

Dangle earrings can make any outfit go from day to night.  On a busy day when you are going form work to a party, you can easily change your shoes and jewelry to get the “night time” look.  These earrings look great with whatever length of hair you have and can really make a bold statement.  There are numerous styles of these long earrings form feathers, diamonds, strands and many more.  So have some fun and play around with these versatile types of earrings to find your perfect pair (or pairs!).

FASHION: Gwen Stefani Launches Harajuku Mini at Target

Last week, style icon Gwen Stefani launched a limited-run collection for Target. Called Harajuku Mini, it is inspired by Stefani’s other clothing lines and by her own personal sense of style.

Many fashionistas were disappointed to learn that the collection is only for kids – but, the children that get to don these duds are truly lucky!

The stylish Harajuku Mini collection is an offshoot of the line she did with Target last year called Harajuku Lovers. All of Ms. Stefani’s Harajuku work is inspired by the bold prints and patterns of the Harajuku District of Japan, which is one of the most revered and avant garde fashion capitals of the world. It boasts an electic mix of fashion-forward styles ranging from gothic to Lolita, visual kei, decora, Asian and tribal influences, and more.

The Harajuku Mini collection for Target features clothing for boys and girls, and includes animal-inspired hoodies, tutus, and plaid pants,  plus prints and graphics galore.

There is clothing for little kids up to the “tween” age. Gwen Stefani was quoted as saying, “Ultimately, with the tween line, I wanted them to feel cool and that they’re expressing themselves through their clothes — that’s what I always did. It’s a sensitive age. I was still really into Hello Kitty, but in a different way. I wanted to wear it with like, zippered skirts, but your parents still want you to be a little girl.”

About the collection as a whole, she also went on to say,  “When I get dressed in the morning, it’s a reflection of how I’m feeling that day, so when I first went to Japan and saw the Harajuku, I felt like, ‘How perfect — a catwalk for kids to go, ‘I want to be real and unique and express myself.’’ That’s the DNA of the line. It’s my style mixed with the way the Japanese dress their kids — a lot of clashing and mixing and things that you wouldn’t think go together. I wanted the Harajuku Mini collection to reflect that kookiness. I also got to put some of my signature styles through the years in: punker pants, plaid skirts, zippers. Target wanted all of it. This is really cute and really wearable. It’s so fun. I wanted it to look like all of my signature looks that I’ve done through the years, kind of for children. I wanted to bring fashion to kids.”

Stefani says that own two quite stylish boys helped her design the collection. “My kids have a big opinion about it,” she said.

Check out some of the best looks from the Harajuku Mini line as well as of Gwen at the launch for Target.

Fashion: Winter Trends -The Everlasting Ugg!

With fall in full swing and the winter months looming ahead, many people are looking for the hottest fashion for cold weather seasons. Indeed, every year the fashion market shifts, even if just a little bit, meaning that it is certainly a good idea for fashion-conscious people to keep an eye on designers and trends. One trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon, and which has been popular for many years now, is that of wearing boots that double as fashion items and pieces of warmth. For the most part, this trend is due to the explosive popularity of Ugg Boots, which have gained notoriety worldwide in recent years, having originated as unique Australian boot designs. Fans of these sorts of boots will be happy to know that there are a number of newer styles being offered by the brand this season.

One trend that seems to be occurring within the Ugg brand is the availability of taller boots. The classic Ugg style, which we’ve all seen on people for years now, is designed to go about midway up the shin, however, a few of Ugg’s newer boot offerings are designed to fit just below the knee, providing an entirely different look (as well as more leg warmth!). For examples of this new story, check out the Bomber Chestnut Over The Knee Bailey Boot, or the Lotus Brown Over The Knee Bailey Boot, which both have similar designs within this new style.

Ugg has also made some changes with newer styles that go the other way, in that they are lower than the classic style. In fact, some of the shorter new Ugg boots barely even resemble the classics or the knee boots, in that they have harder soles, and even heels in some instances. It can be great to grab a smaller pair of Uggs, like the Black Leather Lynnea Shearling Clog Boot, or any number of similar offerings, in order to give yourself more options with your footwear in the coming, colder months.

These are just a couple of styles in what has become actually quite an extensive collection offered by Ugg boots. The truth is, this brand name is so hot lately, and has been so popular for years now, that virtually anything they put out will be considered trendy and stylish, and will be picked up by thousands of customers. If you’re looking for some fashion compliments, or even just some new footwear this season, the Ugg collection is definitely a good one to keep your eye on. You can’t go wrong with a new pair of these famed boots.

Fashion: Trend Watch – Cut Outs, Open Backs, and Bare Midriffs

Bare upper midriffs and strategically placed cutouts are making a comeback in the fashion world, even as winter months grow cooler.

Recently, Keira Knightley wore a stunning Roksandra Ilinic gown on the red carpet for the premiere of her upcoming film, ‘A Dangerous Method.’ The black and white dress bared a portion of her upper midriff, as well as having a more open back.

Gwyneth Paltrow did it on a September 2011 red carpet in a stunning piece by Emilio Pucci which was black with embellishments and a little bit of bare belly.

Alexa Chung, Nicole Richie, and Jessica Szohr have also donned the daring style on the red carpet.

Aside from bare midriffs, bare backs and interesting cutouts are also showing up all over the place.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely wore a positively stunning Max Mara dress recently, while Jennifer Aniston and Ginnifer Godwin did their own takes on cutouts.

Donna Mizani, Factory by Eric Hart, and the Revolt Clothing Lovers & Friends line are showing unique cutouts on some of their holiday collection cocktail dresses, too.

And – don’t forget, you can bring sexy back – literally – with a modest-in-the-front, scandalous-in-the-back look. An open-backed dress can be even more alluring than showing leg or Décolletage.

One of my favorite looks was from early 2011. It was Anne Hathaway’s gorgeous open back dress at the Golden Globe Awards, which was very conservative from the front but lovely from the back.

Jessica Casatain’s Elie Saab Fall 2011 gown at the Venice Film Festival was another great option.

More recently, celebrities such as Keira Knightley and Taylor Swift stunned in adaptations by the aforementioned Rosksandra Ilinic and Contrarian New York, both this month and last month, respectively.

Even Sir Paul McCartney’s bride, Nancy Shevell wore a daring backless black dress in September.

Check out photos – how much would YOU bare?

Fashion: Trend Watch – Tea Length and Midi Dresses Still Going Strong

Perhaps it is the classic and modest style of Kate Middleton trickling across the pond, or the boost of ladylike fashions inspired by the hit show, Mad Men, but a longer hemline is now hotter than ever.

Formerly frumpy, ankle and tea-length dresses enjoyed a brief comeback in Fall 2010 before blazing boldly  back onto the scene this year.

Most recently, Keira Knightley, Madonna, and Anne Hathaway have worn this trend and done so beautifully and right on point, with modest dresses hitting between the mid-calf and the ankle.

If you are going to try this trend, sometimes called “midi-skirts,” the trick is to remember proportions, to accentuate the waist, and to choose appropriate shoes that won’t “cut you off” at the ankle, making your legs appear shorter. Also, remember to keep the entire look age-appropriate to avoid it feeling costumey or too “old.” Another tip? Keeping it monochromatic is best for more petite builds.

Please enjoy some memorable “longer” looks from the past year. Gemma Artenton wore a mauve version by Louis Vuitton. The young Hailee Steinfield wore a very age-appropriate look by Miu Miu. Madonna kept it edgy, and the ever-quirky Carrie Mulligan kept hers girly and demure.

Fashion-forward actress Elizabeth Olsen opted for a tiered skirt that hit at approximately ankle-length and was right on trend while standing out from the crowd at her London premiere of Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley, in Alexander McQueen Resort and Roksanda Ilincic showed that a more ladylike look can still be sexy.

Who do you think got it right? Who got it wrong? And, out of all of these lovely ladies, who wore it best?
