BEAUTY: Couture For Your Lips – YSL Golden Gloss

Like a diamond on your finger, a Bedazzled pair of jeans, or a glitter topcoat for your nails, Yves Saint Laurent Golden Gloss brings the bling. A most luxurious, sparkling lip gloss beloved by celebrity makeup artists, divas and starlets, Golden Gloss contains real 24 carat gold flecks (OK, OK … only .2%, but still).

The gloss comes in a gorgeous array of 33 shades. My current pick: #30 Golden Satin, a universally flattering golden pink. There are vivid violets, neutrals, pinks, and reds to complement any skin tone. These glosses look great on everyone and are especially fantastic for weddings, hot dates, holidays and any other time you want to turn up the wow factor.

The gloss is scented with a “hint of mango.” It’s not my favorite lip gloss flavor to be honest with you but the hydrating high shine is quite worth it. The formula features nigella (black cumin seed) and cameline (German sesame) oils to nourish and soothe. Golden Gloss looks beautiful alone or paired with lipstick.

YSL Golden Gloss retails for $30 at Sephora and Nordstrom.

BEAUTY – “It Girl” Meets Girl-Next-Door: Emma Stone Shines At 2012 SAG Awards

Every so often an actress comes along who possesses that special something, that “it” factor separating her from a long line of homogenous Hollywood honeys. Emma Stone is one of those rare – a classic beauty with charm, wit, class, humility and humor… not to mention that sexy, husky voice worthy of Fiona Apple or a young Kathleen Turner.

At the 2012 SAG Awards Emma complemented her porcelain skin and auburn locks with soft, pretty makeup you can recreate easily at home. This look is all about lashes, liner and rosebud-colored lips. Start with a medium to full-coverage foundation and apply concealer around eyes, nose and mouth. Follow with a light dusting of powder all over to set. Next, swirl a pinky-peach shade of blush across apples of cheeks (NARS Orgasm never fails). Fill in sparse areas of eyebrows with brow powder (Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo is nice) and an angle brush, concentrating color on the arch and tail. Finish the look with black liquid liner on top, at least three coats of mascara and a rosebud hued lipstick. I just discovered Wet ‘n Wild Mega Last Lipstick: it costs about $3 and has a long-lasting, creamy finish. Shade 904B Rosebud is a dead-ringer for this look.

BEAUTY: Smells Like A Gummy Bear, Soothes Like a Dream – Freeman Goji Berry Facial Hydration Mask

Is your face a hot mess? Has parched, flaking, disastrous winter skin got you down? If so, get ready to meet your savior: the Goji Berry Facial Hydration Mask by Freeman. This mask, which the company claims “helps restore healthy skin tone and improves moisture retention,” is a soothing, moisture-rich treat for dehydrated, chapped, aging, stressed or tired skin. It’s the perfect happy ending to a day on the slopes, or to “one of those days” when you need some pampering.

Goji Berry Facial Hydration Mask has a delightfully slippery and gelatinous texture, and its yummy fragrance is so fresh and fruity you’ll want to slather it on all over; you can apply as thin or thick of a layer as you’d like. The mask packs pure aloe, goji berry, blueberry, mango, pomegranate, Indian mulberry, cranberry, vitamin E, and avocado together into a quenching, fruity-licious anti-oxidant elixir.

Although intended to be rinsed off with warm water after 10 minutes, I usually leave it on overnight. I have been using it a few times a week for nearly a month and have seen a marked improvement in overall skin texture, radiance and fine lines. The mask is suitable for all skin types, except perhaps the most sensitive. It’s especially great for those with oily skin who crave the hydration of a rich cream without the greasy feel.
Freeman Beauty was founded in 1976 and is based out of Beverly Hills, CA. The company specializes in skin, body and hair care products that combine “the beauty of nature” with “the benefit of science.”

Goji Berry Facial Hydration Mask is available in .5 ounce packets for $1.99 at walmart and six ounce tubes for $3.99 at freemanbeauty.com.

In conjunction with Rimmel London, the cosmetics line she has represented for a decade now, supermodel Kate Moss has launched five Lasting Finish Lipsticks sure to please everyone from teen girls and daring fashionistas to conservative ladies who lunch. Known for her effortless rock ‘n roll chic both on and off the runway, Moss has created five glamorous colors that reflect the ‘easy to wear, classic shades’ she has ‘always worn and loved.’ The lip colors are presented in a matte black tube emblazoned with the fashion icon’s signature in bright red.

BEAUTY: Hair à la Nirvana – Slick/Greasy/Wet looks Make a Comeback for Spring

If you were any bit into grunge in the 1990s, then chances are you are well aware of the hair styles popularized by the likes of Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Eddie Vedder, Johnny Depp and Kate Moss: stringy, greasy, and undone. Many models on the Spring 2012 runways exhibited a similar look, albeit with a high fashion polish and sophistication.

From damp and dewy, slick and shiny, to oiled and glistening, one of the hottest new hair trends for spring is all about a non-dry texture. Alexander Wang models appeared to be fresh from a rain shower, with wet, tousled strands hanging over shoulders in a devil-may-care manner. Another daring version popped up at shows such as BCBG and Giambattista Valli, where models walked out with damp or oily roots that were combed straight back, as the remaining hair was left dry and mussed up.

Contrary to true grunge styles, you don’t have to go four days without shampooing to achieve these looks. Runway hair stylist extraordinaire Guido used Argan oil (Moroccanoil) to create many of these ‘dos. You can also try a shine spray such as Bumble & Bumble Shine On for super gloss, or Luster’s Pink Sheen Spray, a classic conditioning spray with vitamin E. Another fun option is shimmering pomade, such as Regis Design Line Enchanted Gold Dust Finisher. For a tousled-all-over look, begin with a lightweight leave-in conditioner such as Paul Mitchell’s The Conditioner. Comb through damp strands, and then apply pomade as desired for a piece-y, sparkling effect. Mess it up with your fingers, then simply air-dry.

Moroccanoil Oil Treatment retails for $15-39 at folica.com
Bumble & Bumble Shine On is available for $25 at bumbleandbumble.com
Luster’s Pink Sheen Spray is available for $4 at walgreens.com
Paul Mitchell The Conditioner retails for $17 at drugstore.com

BEAUTY: Put Your Best Face Forward – Cover FX Skin Prep FX

Looking to improve the texture and appearance of your skin? Want a smoother, longer lasting foundation application? Cover FX Skin Prep FX Nourishing Foundation Primer & Anti-Aging Serum is the perfect double-duty product to try, especially now with winter winds whipping about and indoor heating on full blast.

I have always been quite skeptical as to the effectiveness of so-called “primers,” the pre-foundation potions designed to lengthen the wear of makeup, even out skin tone and control shine. More often than not I found them to be greasy and pointless; most primers these days are heavily silicone or dimethicone-based, ensuring a BP-worthy oil slick when applied.

Fortunately Cover FX Skin Prep FX has a lightly slippery, gelée-like texture that absorbs quickly into the skin. The oil-free, fragrance-free formula boasts a potent cocktail of vitamins to fight wrinkles and free radicals and increase collagen production. Omega-3 fatty acid and hyaluronic acid re-hydrate and plump, while a chamomile derivative reduces redness and inflammation. Last but not least there is even an ingredient to aid skin repair and wound healing.

On top of its skin-improving qualities, using Skin Prep FX underneath your foundation will ensure optimal coverage and wear, minimizing the appearance of pores and fine lines. Your makeup will appear fresher, longer. Safe enough for very sensitive skin, this serum-primer will not clog pores or cause breakouts as many primers often do. As it turns out this product is not the most wallet-friendly, but thankfully a little goes a long way.

Cover FX Skin Prep FX is available for $45 at Sephora.com

BEAUTY: Spring 2012 Color Watch – Mint Green

“…And I also believe that mint will be very big in fashion next spring.” –Lady Gaga, from her new video “Marry The Night

Pastels are always a shoe-in when it comes to spring beauty. Mint green and its variations, including sea foam green, spring green and institution green has leapt off candy shelves and sanitarium walls onto the nails, lips, and hair of daring fashionistas.

The color is certainly not new – it reached peak popularity in the 1960s and faded into the retro horizon but has regained great momentum the past few seasons. Karl Lagerfeld debuted a smattering of mint green amidst his staple black and white on the Fall 2009 Chanel runway. Lady Gaga has recently even sported the color on her cheeks, but I can assure you this is not a good look. Do not, I repeat, not try that at home.

For a more wearable, real world-worthy version, try a wash of mint green shadow across eyelids, or draw a thick line along upper lids. There is also a bevy of nail lacquers to try: Jade and Nouvelle Vague by Chanel, Office by American Apparel, Re-Fresh Mint by China Glaze and OPI’s Damone Roberts 1968 all offer a fresh spin on this mod hue.

BEAUTY: Haute Chocolat – Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E

It’s nearly December, and the dry air is upon us. As we move into winter it’s almost inevitable that this lower environmental moisture level will take a toll on our skin. In fact, there’s seemingly nothing worse than the feeling of cracked elbows, hands, knees and feet – you know, the kind that snags on the covers at night… Ew. Drastic times call for drastic measures. That’s why each summer and winter, as the extreme temperatures hit, I switch up my skincare routine to compensate. For the past decade there is one product I’ve relied upon to keep the dry skin at bay: Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E.

Let me start by discussing the fragrance: heavenly. For gourmand lovers, you won’t find another cream with a richer chocolate frosting fragrance. A few whiffs with your nose over the jar is as good as Prozac, and my guess is that your significant other will love it too. (Seriously, what’s better than a sexy, smooth body that smells like chocolate cream?)

Palmer’s butter cream consistency melts into skin and penetrates deeply enough to help prevent stretch marks (hello, pregnancy). The formula itself is rather simple – a blend of cocoa seed butter, cocoa extract, mineral oil, wax and vitamin E, and does not contain parabens. If you’re looking for oil-free, you’d better run and hide, because this product is as thick as it gets. However, if applied directly after the shower, it soaks into skin nicely and dries down to a soft finish. It has a mild skin “toning” effect that is either from the cocoa butter itself, or the massage used to apply it. What is more, Palmer’s has a multitude of uses: massage cream, under eye cream, lip balm, cuticle cream, after-pedicure cream, hand cream, stretch mark prevention, scar fading, after-sun butter, tan preserver, flyaway tamer… need I say more?

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E retails at approximately $4 for a 3.5 oz. jar.

BEAUTY: Pucker Up With the Color of the Season

No beauty insider worth her weight in, um, lipstick can deny the resurrection of red lips that has taken place over the last several years. They’ve become a staple on fall and spring runways, red carpets, and sidewalks alike. Once reserved for ladies of the night, Halloween Marilyn Monroe costumes and, well, my little Italian grandmother, red lips have since regained their dignified place in the spotlight. With a nod to classic pin-up looks and Old Hollywood glamour, a rouge pout indelibly incites feelings of nostalgia for decades past. Fortunately, it doesn’t matter if your look isn’t retro or vintage; fortunately, today’s red lips aren’t about looking costume-y (sorry Katy Perry), but rather, modern and sophisticated. So without further ado here are nine timeless red lipsticks to try, and a brief synopsis on each.

  1. MAC Russian Red - This is one of my favorite lipsticks of all time; it’s a warm, rich red that looks great on everyone. The lipstick made its debut in the 1980s and rose to stardom after it was popularized by Madonna during her infamous Blonde Ambition tour in 1990. Russian Red is a showstopper, and if it’s good enough for Madonna, it’s good enough for me ($15 – BUY IT).
  2. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice - An affordable orangey red. For you Mad Men enthusiasts, this is a throwback to the 1950’s house wife that’s remarkably very wearable, with a creamy finish. ( $6 – BUY IT).

  3. MAC Ruby Woo – This uber-flattering, high impact blue-based red has been around since. Its retro matte finish (read: dry yet superbly pigmented) is beloved by modern-day burlesque bombshell Dita Von Teese. You don’t have to be schooled in the “art of the tease” to wear it, although its vibrant hue might inspire you to pick up some black liquid liner, thigh highs and stilettos. Moisturize lips sufficiently prior to its application. ($14.50 – BUY IT).

  4. YSL Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick in #17 Red Muse - A wet, luxurious formula enhanced with mango extract for a luscious supermodel pout that protects with SPF 15. Line lips prior to applying this slippery formula. This red first appeared on the fall 2009 Yves Saint Laurent runway in Paris. ($34 at Sephora – BUY IT).

  5. La Prairie Cellular Luxe Lip Colour in Rouge Claire – With what might be better known as haute couture for your lips, La Prairie steps up its lip wear game with this superb scarlet lipstick, complete with caviar extract and a Cellular Complex that yields line-filling effects. ($55 – BUY IT).

  6. NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick in Jungle Red - What separates this brilliant red from the rest of the pack is its hydrating formula. While some semi-mattes wear down to a dry finish on your lips, this one blends conditioners and antioxidants for healthy, long-lasting color. ($24 – BUY IT).

  7. Christian Dior Addict Lipstick in Numerical Red – This has been a longtime personal favorite of mine. It’s a super-flattering, fire engine WOW! red lipstick with a shiny, emollient finish. Looks beautiful on olive skin. Très chic! ($28 – BUY IT).

  8. Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Satin Lip Colour in Passion – The quilted gold chained handbag, the boucle suit, the perfect beige flat… Chanel has so many classics, and this tomato red lipstick fortified with vitamin E and shea butter is another to add to the list. ($32 – BUY IT).

  9. Maybelline ColorSensational Lip Color in Red Revival 645 - This bold ruby hue derives its “crisp” color from pure pigments, while honey nectar lends a creamy finish. Not to mention it’s easy on the wallet. ($8 – BUY IT).
