BEAUTY: Fresh Makeup Trends for Spring 2012

Are you curious about what makeup to wear this spring? One of the beauty challenges that real women consistently face is how to make runway trends wearable in their day to day lives.  With such a variety of makeup looks presented at the collections, not to mention the dizzying array of new products on the shelves, the world of runway beauty can be difficult to navigate.

I had the pleasure of speaking with New York-based celebrity makeup artist Michelle Coursey, who has worked with the likes of Mariah Carey, Emma Stone and Petra Nemcova, to name a few. She’s also a regular backstage each season at New York fashion week. I asked her to divulge her favorite beauty trends for spring that women can take from the runway to real life, and this is what she told me:

  1. 1.     “A bright pop of color somewhere on the face, whether it’s a super bright lipstick, eyeliner or eyeshadow, is a really quick and easy way to brighten up your look.”
  2. 2.     Androgyny (girl/boy, blurred gender lines) was in. While some of you girly-girls may not find this appealing, it’s actually quite a flattering way to modernize your look. Coursey suggested a very user-friendly approach, “which translates to strong brows, clean skin and minimal makeup on the rest of the face.”
  3. 3.     “Imperfect makeup” is the “easiest trend of all to achieve” she said. “No need to worry about perfectly applied lipstick or precisely drawn eyeliner; makeup artists embraced makeup that was smudged on and worn in, which is something everyone can do! A great example of this is the “Popsicle lip” where the bulk of the color is applied to the center of the lips and then allowed to bleed out naturally to the edges of the mouth.”

BEAUTY – How To: Hair Chalking

Does your hair need a colorful, quick, and flirty dye job? Try this simple do-it-yourself trend that adds the most perfect, temporary tint—hair chalking. Yes, the idea has been around for a bit now, but it’s becoming more popular everyday and is quickly becoming the new ‘it’ hairstyle. Although Lauren Conrad was the first to be spotted rocking this look with her “Cotton Candy Bun”, countless of other famous fashionistas and runway models have been seen with the newest hair craze, including Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga.

So do you too want to add a little color to your life? Follow these simple directions and tips below!

- When you are ready to begin chalking, first twist the sections of hair you are about to add chalk to.

*IF YOU ARE BLONDE- Do not wet your hair before chalking. This will cause the pigment stain and will last in your hair after a few washes, making the color not so temporary after all.
*IF YOUR HAIR IS DARKER- Make sure to wet your hair before chalking. You can do so by simply wetting sections of your hair using a spray bottle.
*IF YOU HAVE RED HAIR- Try chalking without adding water at first, if the pigment does not show up, add a little water. It really depends on how light or dark the red is.

-Try applying two different colors to a strand at once. This ends up giving your hair a more tie-dyed look, which is more fun!

-Make sure to use SOFT PASTELS. The ones that work the most seem to be Senellier brand pastels because the color is more intense. DO NOT just buy regular chalk or oil pastels. This is important!

-When applying the chalk, make sure to wear a robe or cape and lay something on the floor because the chalk dust will get everywhere.

AFTER CHALKING
-Wearing an updo may be the best way to rock your new style—at times the chalk can rub off onto your clothing.
-Before showering, make sure to brush out as much of the chalk as possible. Most of it will come out after brushing.
-ALWAYS shampoo hair after chalking. There is a very small amount of “gum arabic” in soft chalk pastels, which is actually made from tree sap, so it’s important to get it out.
-YOU MUST also condition hair afterwards. The chalk itself can suck up a lot of natural moisture in your hair, so it’s important to replenish the moisture that was lost!

It’s as easy as that! It only takes a few minutes and can really add that extra POP you’ve been looking for! The best part is that it’s temporary, so you can switch it up every time! Have fun with this flirt look MANIACS, and send us your ‘chalking’ before and after photos!

MUSIC: The 54th Annual Grammy Awards – Performances to Remember

On Sunday February 12, 2012, “Music’s Biggest Night” was back with the 54th Annual Grammy Awards . For the music industry, this night is comparable to the Super Bowl, and needless to say, music lovers all across the globe tuned in to see all their favorites perform and take home the coveted little gold gramophone statues that have made an iconic impact on recording history.

Artists like Adele, The Civil Wars, Bon Iver, Foo Fighters, Skrillex, Tony Bennett, and Taylor Swift all took home the beloved statues – aka the highest honor one can receive in music – some even sweeping every category they were nominated in. Adele won six Grammys, proving beyond a doubt, that she is here to make her presence and talent known in music. Full list of winners here: http://www.grammy.com/nominees

Valentine’s Day – When You Care Enough to Hit Send

If you are unsure of how to express your feelings towards a significant (or insignificant) other this Valentine’s Day, consider sending him or her an online greeting from someecards.com. With its tongue-in-cheek tagline “when you care enough to hit send,” the site offers everything from compliments to insults, love advice to general disgust in the so-called Hallmark holiday.

The site calls out the holiday for what it is, making references to the absurd and ridiculous symbols of love in a self-deprecating kind of way. One of the most popular cards reads, You make me feel like a pudgy, naked, wing child has shot an arrow into my chest cavity.

No matter your relationship status this Valentine’s Day, someecards has it covered with its numerous sassy salutations to be sent via e-mail or shared across the social networking universe. For those in lust, the site offers cards which read, I can’t believe how much I’m not sick of you. and I’m ready to change my Facebook relationship status if you are. For those in love, humorous cards proclaim, I’d like you to be my emergency contact person. or Someday I want to adopt an Asian baby with you. And for all those single Maniacs out there, This is the perfect night to troll the city for updateable alcoholics and Let’s spend Valentine’s Day alone together.

In case these examples didn’t give it away, someecards have very little in common with typical greeting cards. While cards you buy at the store tend to use grand, “flowery statements,” Duncan Mitchell, co-founder and CEO of the company, said the cards on his site are more about honesty. “We wanted our cards to be ‘cards for every occasion from extremely important to utterly pointless.’”

The site offers cards for birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. But it also offers cards for not-so-typical events, with categories including breakups, cry for help, flirting, occupy something, somewhat topical and workplace. The cards are witty one-liners, accompanied by stock, Victorian-style art.

“I think the art works because it contrasts with the message,” Mitchell said. “The images should be surprising and hopefully add another layer of meaning. Sometimes the art is silly and adds emotion, and sometimes the art is more literal and adds context.”

Someecards express the unarticulated thought. The cards are smart and to-the-point, but most importantly the cards are funny because they are true. For example, there is a Mother’s/Father’s Day card that reads, I love how we don’t even have to say I’m your favorite child.

One of Mitchell’s favorite cards reads, When work feels overwhelming, remember you’re going to die.

“It sounds, on the surface, cynical, but it’s really a positive message because it’s saying lighten up, don’t take things so seriously,” he said. “That’s why it is so popular. The little things that bug you day to day, you need to put it in perspective.”

The cards work in these daily life situations because people need a little help communicating with one another. “These are cliché moments that aren’t articulated well,” Mitchell said. “We write cards for any occasion that people need a smarter, funnier, truer and maybe even more specific way to communicate about.”

When it comes to writing cards, there are a bunch of rules to be followed. The cards take a specific moment and describe it in a one lined sentence filled with sharp humor. “The biggest thing is that the card is true. It has to be a surprising truth, like ‘Oh that’s totally what I was thinking, but I never thought of it that way,’” Mitchell explained. “The cards are almost always written in the first person. The truth is the overriding concept. Jokes that aren’t true aren’t as interesting.”

The idea of someecards started back in 2007, when Brook Lundy, co-founder and President, and Mitchell would surf the web for quirky greetings to send to one another to lighten the load of the work day. Lundy quickly realized there wasn’t much on the Internet that made any sense to send between buddies. He soon came up with the idea of sending and sharing personal greetings online. Lundy and Mitchell ran with this idea and developed a small website, which they sent out to friends and family. The response was overwhelming, with site traffic on a constant rise.

Within a year, Lundy and Mitchell saw such success in their business they ultimately had to leave their big-time jobs with New York advertising firms. They figured with their backgrounds in online advertising, navigating an Internet company wouldn’t be so hard. They were wrong.

“One of the jokes we always talk about is how we were Internet experts who ended up realizing we know nothing about the Internet,” Mitchell said with a laugh. “I think we were good at our jobs, but there are so many other aspects to making a business online. We had to figure out a lot of it from scratch.”

Mitchell said the team had to generate ad sales, develop and scale the site, make it fast and make it work across social networks. As they built their business, the web changed. Sites like Twitter and Tumblr became overnight successes. Lundy and Mitchell knew they had to stay on top of the social networking world to continue to develop their brand.

“We designed the original business before twitter was big, so we had to learn along the way how to use different social media and make it work,” Mitchell explained.

Someecards continues to use social networking to its advantage. The company has a Facebook app and a fan page, an iPhone app, and about 1.7 million twitter followers. Someecards has certainly got its name out there, averaging about 5.5 million visits to the site per month.

“When we started, at that moment, the idea was pretty surprising and out there. There hadn’t been anything quite like it,” Mitchell reflected. “It was taken in by people pretty quickly.”

Although someecards seems like an obvious name for the site, Mitchell said a lot of time and energy went into picking the name. “It’s tricky naming something online, especially when you don’t have the money to buy a URL,” he explained. “We came up with a huge list of names, but most of them weren’t available. The idea came out of how we thought about this company—we thought the name should be self-deprecating and not try too hard.”

All the cards on the site are free, but consumers will notice some cards on the site which serve as advertisements. The cards stick with the one-line content, with the sponsor’s logo in the bottom left corner. “These cards are never an ad for the brand, show or product, but rather a message that relates to the mindset of the consumer,” Mitchell said. “It’s the most innovative part of our business model.”

Some of the largest brands in the country work with someecards, including NBC and Budweiser. Currently, NBC is partnering with someecards to promote its new show, Are You There Chelsea? Other partner cards include Fox’s new animated show Napoleon Dynamite, Dove Men’s Care, Comedy Central, Microsoft and Ford Motor Company.

Most of the content is written by a team of writers, run by Lundy, who also functions as the head writer. There is also a team of people who are given daily or weekly assignments and submit their work via e-mail. But one of the most unique concepts the site has is the user card section, where anyone can create their own e-card. Mitchell said over 1,000 cards are created per day. These cards are differentiated by a your ecard logo in the corner, as opposed to the someecards logo.

“We pick the best user submitted card and use it in the regular part of the site,” Mitchell said. “The idea has really taken off, and people rate them and send them. We find the ones that are most appropriate for a bigger audience and move them into the regular site.”

Cards on the site are never deleted, they just vary in popularity. “We keep everything live,” Mitchell explained. “The way it works, the site and sections are all organized by the most popular cards. The less-interesting and older cards fall to the end of the section. The cards that are visited the most organically surface.”

Whether you’re looking to send a card to a loved (or unloved) one this Valentine’s season, or if you’re simply trying to tell your co-worker You’re somewhat useful at work but irreplaceable at happy hour, someecards has all the things you’ve been wanting to say in online greeting card form. Send one today at www.someecards.com.

BEAUTY: Couture For Your Lips – YSL Golden Gloss

Like a diamond on your finger, a Bedazzled pair of jeans, or a glitter topcoat for your nails, Yves Saint Laurent Golden Gloss brings the bling. A most luxurious, sparkling lip gloss beloved by celebrity makeup artists, divas and starlets, Golden Gloss contains real 24 carat gold flecks (OK, OK … only .2%, but still).

The gloss comes in a gorgeous array of 33 shades. My current pick: #30 Golden Satin, a universally flattering golden pink. There are vivid violets, neutrals, pinks, and reds to complement any skin tone. These glosses look great on everyone and are especially fantastic for weddings, hot dates, holidays and any other time you want to turn up the wow factor.

The gloss is scented with a “hint of mango.” It’s not my favorite lip gloss flavor to be honest with you but the hydrating high shine is quite worth it. The formula features nigella (black cumin seed) and cameline (German sesame) oils to nourish and soothe. Golden Gloss looks beautiful alone or paired with lipstick.

YSL Golden Gloss retails for $30 at Sephora and Nordstrom.

MUSIC – An Empire Is Born – Of An Empire’s CD Release Party

By now, it should come as no surprise that I am a huge advocate of the Pittsburgh music scene; everything from hip hop and pop, to straight up rock. The music and talent this city has is not only dynamic, but is also progressive and truly something the rest of the world is starting to notice. Surely, Pittsburgh has produced greats like killer vocalist Christina Aguilera and hip hop icon Wiz Khalifa, but now, it’s time for rock bands to take the reigns. Bands in Pittsburgh are really starting to show the world just what they can do.

Of An Empire (www.ofanempire.com) is one of those Pittsburgh bands that give people a reason to recognize our city as a music town.

Last weekend, Of An Empire had their CD release party for their album, OAE, at Club Café. Though the record itself – available on their site and on iTunes – had a soft launch in 2011, the band’s official release was certainly something to talk about. Ever since I have heard of the band, they have had a buzz surrounding them; it was hard for me to not hear a conversation that didn’t include lead vocalist and guitarist Camden Leeds’ and drummer Matt Gray’s names. They have been huge staples in the business.

Entering Club Café was a bit tricky. The venue was absolutely packed, and naturally, I needed to make my way to the bar for a beverage. That was not an easy task, since the bodies seemed to be sandwiched together. This was a great sign for the band, in that you could tell right off the bat that they had an amazing amount of support. The opening band, Round Black Ghost, had a ton of people present for their performance as well. The energy level the audience was giving the performers was another great sign for what the night would entail.

Of An Empire’s CD is right up my alley in terms of listening, and is quickly becoming a Maniac favorite. It is a rock album that you can listen all the way through, with powerful vocals, great guitar runs, and driving drumbeats that really hook the listener. The CD opens with a more mellow rock edge on “Days In Between” that is reminiscent of cruising down the highway with the windows down on a summer night. Perfect. Their music makes you feel, and at the end of the day, that’s all anyone wants; to feel something that moves them. They certainly have accomplished that with this record.

OAE opened the show with the above song, which happens to be my personal favorite. When watching the crowd’s reaction, I knew it was the perfect way to suck everyone into their world. The set included emotional highs and lows, as they took the audience on a rollercoaster of anticipation and passion. They succeed on all accounts. Bravo, gentlemen.

The band is made of up Camden Leeds (lead vocals and guitar), Clark Johnson (lead guitar and vocals), Matt Gray (drums and vocals), and Sam Grumet (bass guitar), and they are some of the most down to earth guys you will meet. It certainly makes wanting to support them and their music all the more enjoyable. The CD is great and the show was amazing. With high energy both on stage and in the studio, Of An Empire is a band that is certainly taking Pittsburgh by storm, and here at Maniac, we can’t wait to see what they do next!

For more information about Of An Empire and their album OAE, but sure to check out www.ofanempire.com or visit them on Facebook. Don’t forget to get your copy of OAE today!

BEAUTY – “It Girl” Meets Girl-Next-Door: Emma Stone Shines At 2012 SAG Awards

Every so often an actress comes along who possesses that special something, that “it” factor separating her from a long line of homogenous Hollywood honeys. Emma Stone is one of those rare – a classic beauty with charm, wit, class, humility and humor… not to mention that sexy, husky voice worthy of Fiona Apple or a young Kathleen Turner.

At the 2012 SAG Awards Emma complemented her porcelain skin and auburn locks with soft, pretty makeup you can recreate easily at home. This look is all about lashes, liner and rosebud-colored lips. Start with a medium to full-coverage foundation and apply concealer around eyes, nose and mouth. Follow with a light dusting of powder all over to set. Next, swirl a pinky-peach shade of blush across apples of cheeks (NARS Orgasm never fails). Fill in sparse areas of eyebrows with brow powder (Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo is nice) and an angle brush, concentrating color on the arch and tail. Finish the look with black liquid liner on top, at least three coats of mascara and a rosebud hued lipstick. I just discovered Wet ‘n Wild Mega Last Lipstick: it costs about $3 and has a long-lasting, creamy finish. Shade 904B Rosebud is a dead-ringer for this look.
